The SA Rugby Union (Saru) owns the Springbok emblem and not the government, an intellectual property legal firm said on Wednesday.

“We have checked with the Register of Trademarks, and Saru is the current owner of the trademark,” said Owen Dean, partner at Spoor & Fisher.

Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile earlier told parliament’s sports portfolio committee that SA Rugby owed the government royalties for the use of the Springbok emblem.

Newly-wed Du Preez prepares for tour

Scrumhalf Fourie Du Preez, who struggled through the latter parts of the Super 14 competition as well as the World Cup with a painful shoulder injury, will tour with the Springboks after all, but clarity on Victor Matfield’s situation will only be known on Tuesday night.

While Du Preez, who married on Saturday, will join up with the squad in Cardiff on Monday, Matfield was to have talks with Springbok coach Jake White late on Tuesday afternoon. Matfield is keen to spend time with his family and friends before finally making up his mind whether he will join Second Division Toulon in France.

Sports minister says ‘quotas are out’

South Africa’s sports minister ruled out racial quotas for national teams on Tuesday after the mainly white Springboks’ recent victory in the Rugby World Cup reignited the debate over transformation.

“Quotas are out,” Makhenkesi Stofile told a parliamentary sports committee.

Springbok bringing the cup home

A ruthless South Africa punished England’s ill-discipline for a tight 15-6 win over the defending champions in the rugby World Cup final at the Stade de France here this morning.

Fullback Percy Montgomery kicked four penalties and 20-year-old centre Francois Steyn one to hand the Springboks their second World Cup triumph after their victory on home soil in 1995.
